Though not as famous as the Premier League or Championship, League One is still an exciting football league with plenty of excitement. Many of the teams gracing were footballing powerhouses in previous years, whilst others are up-and-comers hoping for a life in the Championship.

When looking for League One betting tips, it should be approached exactly the same as other major football leagues - prioritising research and stats over wishful thinking and emotionally-motivated bets.

If you’re keen on betting on your League One predictions, here’s everything you need to know about the division, how it works, and what the betting markets are.

Let’s begin.

How To Bet On League One

Betting on League One takes, like anything else, some research and some general know-how on how the division works and who its best teams are.

Doing your homework is one of the best League One betting tips we can offer you. Luckily, the plethora of stats-based football websites out there makes it easier than ever to know the division like the back of your hand.

Research

The best way to familiarise yourself with the intricacies of League One is to watch games before you bet on them. This may sound like simple advice, but it remains true nonetheless. You can never learn too much about the league before you bet on it, so make sure you catch as much action as you can.

League One's Top Teams

The standout teams of League One will become apparent quickly after you begin watching it. Quite often, these teams have been demoted from the Championship, though this isn’t always the case.

If you already have a team in mind in regards to the play-off or outright winners market, then it’s essential that you research their recent form record, as well as things such as their performances at home and away.

If you’re making a bet on an individual match, then be sure to read up on the respective teams’ recent results. Even the best League One sides have so-called ‘bogey sides’ (sides they often perform poorly against) and it’s vital you’re clued-up on this before you make your bet.

Keep An Eye On Transfers

League One transfers aren’t as flashy as those you may be used to in the Premier League, but they can still have a massive impact on a club’s fortunes, for better or worse.

If a high-performing League One side sells their star striker or their talismanic midfielder, then there’s every chance their league form will tumble. On the other hand, the buying club could massively benefit from these additions and consolidate their high league position even further.

Transfers have a massive effect on every football league - League One is no exception.

What League One Markets Can I Bet On?

With 24 teams battling it out across a long, arduous season, there’s no shortage of betting markets available for the League One fan.

Here are just a few.

Play-Offs

Like every other Football League division, League One offers promotion via an outright (1st place) victory or a play-off route.

Teams who finish from 3rd to 6th place are eligible for a play-off spot, where there are semi-finals (two teams playing a game each) followed by a final.

Play-off betting markets not only include the overall play-off winner, but also who reaches the play-offs and which teams will make up the final.

League One Top Scorer

The large number of games played throughout the League One (46) provides a fertile ground for prolific goalscoring. From the 2018/19 season to the 2021/22 season, the League One top goalscorer scored 25, 24, 31, and 26 goals respectively - higher than the Premier League Golden Boot winners of each season.

The top scorer market is very competitive in this division, and is a thriving, popular avenue for League One bettors.

Outright Winners

Betting out the outright winner is difficult, but the odds in this market are often high. As one of the world’s most competitive football divisions, predicting who walks away with the League One trophy at the end of the season can be a difficult task.

If you fancy your chances, you can bet on the outright winner market and hope to make a handsome return. It’s a tough market though, as the title was decided on just two points in both the 2020-21 and the 2021-22 seasons.

Today's Matches

There is, of course, the option of making straight match-bets for individual League One games. This market is less unpredictable than the outright winners or play-off markets, and predicting who wins an individual game is a great way to start.

You can also bet on shots on target during a match, as well as corners, yellow cards, and sendings-off.

How Well Do Relegated Teams Do?

When picking a League One outright winner, you may be tempted to back a team coming from the Championship. That’s perfectly understandable, however let’s find out how often it really happens.

If we look at the League One winners from 2017-18 to 2021-22, we find that it’s often a good idea to back a team who have just suffered relegation from the second-tier.

  • 2017/18 winners - Wigan Athletic (1st season back in League One)
  • 2018/19 winners - Luton Town (1st season after promotion from League Two)
  • 2019/20 winners - Coventry City (finished 9th the previous season)
  • 2020/21 winners - Hull City (1st season back in League One)
  • 2021/22 winners - Wigan Athletic (finished 20th in the previous season)

In those five seasons, a team coming from the Championship finished 1st in League One twice - Wigan Athletic and Hull City. Another team, Luton Town, won the League One title in their first season after promotion from League Two.

That means League One newcomers won the title on three out of the five occasions - making betting on the new boys a solid idea.

Relegation Odds

Just like with any division, it's also possible to bet on relegation from League One, with four teams going down to League Two at the end of the season. Check out our handy guide to League One relegation odds.
