The Champions League is the time when all eyes will be on Europe’s premier club competition. Fans and sportsbooks see an incredibly busy period during the Champions League season and the competition has tremendous betting potential.

Betting on the Champions League should not be treated lightly, though, as you’ll need to do your homework if you wish to make the best bets you possibly can.

Champions League History

The Champions League began life as the European Cup and was nowhere near as lucrative as it is today. Whilst it was still a highly prestigious prize, winning it, or even qualifying for it, did not come with the rich financial rewards it does today.

The first five European Cup tournaments were dominated by Real Madrid as the Spanish club built their foundation as a true powerhouse. The European Cup’s stature grew and grew and more money came into the game, the competition was expanded in 1992-93 and featured several teams from the strongest leagues, whilst the weaker ones entered only their domestic champion.

How to Bet On The Champions League

Surprises, upsets, and comebacks are commonplace in the Champions League and it’s not unheard of for a team who were previously discounted to stage remarkable turnarounds in form and reach the competition’s deepest stages.

European pedigree is certainly a thing, as experienced and established sides often get the better of newcomers in both the group and knockout stages.

If you’re serious about betting on the Champions League, here are a few UCL betting tips you should look out for.

Champions League Past Winners

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool are some of the most successful clubs in the competition and each have several victories to their name.

Even if these sides are woefully out of form in their domestic league, they’re capable of being a different animal under the bright lights of European theatre as they’re able to use their experience and know-how to get the upper hand over the competition.

When people make their UCL betting predictions at the start of the season, past serial winners are often at the very top of their list.

Clubs with multiple wins in the Champions League era include:

  • Real Madrid
  • Bayern Munich
  • Liverpool
  • AC Milan
  • Barcelona
  • Manchester United
  • Chelsea
  • Juventus

Understand Statistical Trends

Not all European leagues are equal in quality and certain eras of the Champions League have been dominated by clubs from the same league.

For example, Champions League finals during the 2000s featured Italian clubs in the 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2010 finals. The next decade was dominated by Spanish clubs as Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid either won several tournaments or reached several finals.

Different leagues have had their respective period of dominance over the Champions League and being aware of which one is in-vogue right now is key to successfully betting on the continent’s most prestigious club competition.

The most successful domestic leagues in the Champions League era are:

  • La Liga (Spain)
  • Premier League (England)
  • Bundesliga (Germany)
  • Serie A (Italy)

France’s Ligue 1 has had dismal fortune in the UEFA Champions League, producing only one winner in the first 30 years of the competition (Marseille) and a singular runners-up medal for Paris Saint Germain.

Champions League Back-To-Back Winners

Though usually a handful of the same teams reach the latter stages, winning back-to-back Champions League titles has been borderline-impossible.

Since the competition was rebranded in 1992, only once has it been successfully retained - by Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017. In fact, Real went on to win a third title on the bounce in 2018 - though the quality of that side was, quite frankly, outrageous.

Most punters would have bet on the legendary Barcelona side in the late-2000s to win consecutive Champions Leagues, but even they were unable to do so. Pep Guardiola’s men won the competition in 2009 and 2011, but missed out on the 2010 trophy to Inter Milan. Ancelotti’s AC Milan, Ferguson’s Manchester United, and Mourinho’s Inter also fell short of back-to-back titles, proving how hard it is to build a true European dynasty.

To sum up, retaining the famous trophy has proved too big of a task for all but one side, so it’s worth thinking twice before put a bet on a team to win the Champions League simply because they did so the season before.

Betting On UCL Favourites

One of the reasons why the Champions League is such an enchanting contest is because of the number of shocking comebacks, upsets, and surprises it has given us.

The knockout nature of the tournament encourages attacking, direct football, often resulting in high-scoring games and dramatic fightbacks. This is why you can never be too certain on who goes on to lift the trophy at the end of May.

The most famous example of this is the 2005 final - when Liverpool, who were trailing 3-0 at half-time, defeated favourites AC Milan on penalties and sent the footballing world into frenzy.

Another example of the statistical underdogs winning was when Real Madrid overcame PSG, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Liverpool in 2021/22. Madrid trailed for most of their knockout games only to come back from the brink each time, winning their 14th European Cup to the surprise of almost everybody.

The Champions League is not as transparent a competition as most would think, and the favourites don’t always end up with silverware after all is said and done. Most Champions League tips involve betting on the favorte, but time and time again has the statistical favourite come up short.

How To Watch Champions League Live

In the UK, Champions League matches are available to watch with a BT Sport subscription. UCL matches are also streamed live on the BT Sport app. Each season, BT Sport usually broadcasts the Champions League final for free. BT Sport confirmed the 2023 Champions League final will be free to watch on YouTube.

Champions League Betting Tips Summary

Betting on the Champions League is always unpredictable, but you’re best off looking at the competition’s elite clubs and researching the dominance of certain European leagues.

Putting money on the previous winner is a risky strategy considering only one club has managed to retain the trophy, and you shouldn’t be too surprised if an upset or two occurs along the way.
