Welcome to The Final Third. Midnite’s weekly briefing on the stories, shifts and fixtures that matter most.

TL;DR

  • Arsenal take control of the title race after Manchester City's chaotic draw at Everton.
  • Southampton face an EFL spying investigation just days before their Championship play-off semi-final against Middlesbrough.
  • Michael Carrick secures Champions League qualification for Manchester United but remains in the dark on his future.
  • West Ham host Arsenal in a Sunday clash colliding the title race with the relegation scrap.

What Mattered This Week

The Title Race Swings at Goodison

Just as Manchester City prepared their traditional late-season surge, a chaotic 3-3 draw at Everton ripped up the script. Dropping points handed the title race straight back to Arsenal, who made no mistakes with a 3-0 dismantling of Fulham at the Emirates. The Gunners sit top on 76 points, holding a five-point cushion over City, who do still have a game in hand. For City it’s no more mistakes, while Mikel Arteta’s side now control their own destiny with three matches remaining.

Carrick Delivers Amidst United's Uncertainty

Michael Carrick continues to just…. Deliver. Unassuming, the former Red Devil’s midfielder has secured Champions League football for Manchester United with a 3-2 victory over Arne Slot’s Liverpool. In classic Slot fashion, the Liverpool manager had his VAR rant rehearsed, but ultimately it was United's dynamic movement that exposed a rotated Liverpool setup.

Despite achieving the club's primary domestic objective and sitting comfortably in third on 64 points, Carrick… still doesn’t know if he has a job come August. It highlights a bizarre holding pattern at Old Trafford: Carrick consistently delivers on the pitch, yet the boardroom hesitates to provide clarity heading into the summer.

Spurs Find Relief Under De Zerbi

Tottenham finally found some momentum, securing a 2-1 away win against Aston Villa to inch away from the drop zone. Roberto De Zerbi quickly dismissed claims that Spurs only won because The Villains were more focussed on reaching the Europa League final (which they did), pointing instead to a genuinely resilient performance. Sitting on 37 points, just one above 18th-placed West Ham, the victory gives Spurs crucial breathing room. It proves De Zerbi can extract competitive grit from his squad when the stakes are highest, halting a previously spiralling season.

What To Watch This Weekend

Middlesbrough vs Southampton

Play-off football is tense enough, but an EFL investigation into Southampton staff hiding in the bushes outside the Boro training ground has added some extra spice to this one. With both sides finishing the Championship season deadlocked on 80 points, the margins are razor-thin. Southampton need to silence the off-pitch noise to establish an away advantage, while Boro will undoubtedly use the nosy disrespect as fuel for the fire. This isn't just about reaching the Premier League anymore, this fixture is loaded with animosity.

West Ham United vs Arsenal

Sunday's London derby defines the weekend, colliding the title race directly with the relegation scrap. Arsenal know a win takes them closer to ending a 22-year title drought, but they face a desperate West Ham side sitting in the final relegation spot on 36 points.

It’s a huge dilemma for Gunner’s fans; put pressure on Spurs through West Ham getting a result, or put one hand on the Premier League trophy… surely we know which they’d prefer, right?

Following Tottenham's win and Leeds edging closer to safety, the Hammers are under immense pressure to salvage their top-flight status, meaning Arsenal's tactical composure faces a severe test against West Ham's raw survival instinct.

Liverpool vs Chelsea

Manager-less Chelsea arrive at Anfield on Saturday facing a seventh consecutive league defeat; a grim milestone they haven't hit since 1952. Rocked by an attacking injury crisis and a 3-1 humbling by Nottingham Forest, the Blues look devoid of belief.

That makes them perfect prey for a Liverpool side desperate to bounce back from their Old Trafford defeat. Sitting fourth and level on 58 points with Aston Villa, Arne Slot knows his team cannot afford slip-ups if they want to guarantee the final Champions League spot.

Closing Thought

As the regular season gives way to the reality of May, the margins for error vanish. Whether it is Arsenal navigating the weight of title history, Chelsea trying to halt a historic collapse, or the chaotic brilliance of the Championship play-offs, this weekend will ruthlessly separate the contenders from the casualties.
