What is a clean sheet in football?

A clean sheet happens when a team doesn't concede a goal in a football match. It's a team record rather than the goalkeeper's alone, both sides keep one in a 0-0, and an own goal counts as a goal conceded, so it ends a clean sheet the same way any other goal does.

Ask what is a clean sheet on commentary, in a Fantasy Premier League app or on a betslip, and the clean sheet meaning is the same. The result doesn't come into it. A 0-0 draw is a clean sheet for both teams, and a 4-0 defeat is a clean sheet for the side that scored four.

Why is it called a clean sheet?

What counts as a clean sheet, and what doesn't?

A clean sheet only asks one thing: did the other side get a goal that stood? Most arguments come down to one of these situations.

The extra time row is the one that catches people out. A cup tie that finishes 0-0 after 90 minutes and 1-0 after 120 isn't a clean sheet in anyone's stats, but a bet settled on normal time sees it differently.

Who gets the credit for a clean sheet?

The team always gets the clean sheet. Who gets individual credit depends on what you're looking at.

• The team: every clean sheet belongs to the side that kept it.
• The goalkeeper: the Premier League's Golden Glove goes to the keeper with the most clean sheets in a season. David Raya won the 2025/26 award, his third in a row, with 19 in 37 league games. The record is still Petr Cech's 24 for Chelsea in 2004/05.
• Defenders and midfielders in Fantasy Premier League: players only get clean sheet points if they've played at least 60 minutes. Goalkeepers and defenders get four points for one, and midfielders get one.

That 60-minute rule is why a centre half subbed off on 58 minutes in a 0-0 is a bad afternoon for his Fantasy managers, even though his team kept a clean sheet.

How do clean sheet bets work?

Clean sheet betting markets ask one question: will this team concede? A team to keep a clean sheet bet wins if they don't concede. If they do concede, it can't win, whatever the final score. A win to nil bet needs them to win as well.

How is a clean sheet different from BTTS No and win to nil?

A clean sheet, win to nil and BTTS No get mixed up constantly, because they overlap. The difference is whose goals matter.

• Team to keep a clean sheet: your team concedes nothing. The result doesn't matter.
• Win to nil: your team wins and concedes nothing.
• BTTS No: at least one of the two teams fails to score. It doesn't matter which one.

Say you've got the home side in all three. Here's how different results settle:

• 0-0? Clean sheet wins. Win to nil loses. BTTS No wins.
• 2-0 to the home side? All three win.
• 0-1 to the away side? Clean sheet loses. Win to nil loses. BTTS No wins, because the home side didn't score.
• 2-1 to the home side? All three lose.
