A Brief History of Royal Ascot
Royal Ascot, without a doubt, is one of the most storied and venerable fixtures in the world of horse racing.
Our journey begins in the early 18th century with Queen Anne, who first saw the potential in a stretch of heath land near Windsor Castle. She thought it would make a fabulous place for "horses to gallop at full stretch." The first race, "Her Majesty's Plate," was run in August 1711, and so, Ascot Racecourse was born.
Fast forward to 1807, when the first Gold Cup race took place. This marked the establishment of the Royal Meeting as we know it today, and the Gold Cup remains one of the week's top draws, a true test of stamina for the competing horses.
As the years ticked by, Ascot grew in grandeur and fame. In 1911, the event as we currently know it took shape with the inauguration of 'Royal Ascot Week' by King George V and Queen Mary.
Fast forward again to 2004, when the course underwent a massive redevelopment, culminating in a grand re-opening in 2006. The new grandstand, designed by renowned British architect Lord Norman Foster, is now a landmark in its own right.
Despite all the changes, tradition remains at the heart of Royal Ascot. It is marked by the royal procession that precedes the races each day, when the Queen and other members of the royal family arrive along the track in horse-drawn carriages. It's an iconic sight, setting the stage for the thrilling races to come.
Today, Royal Ascot is one of the highlights of the British summer season, a unique blend of top-tier horse racing, fashion, and royal pageantry. It's a sporting event like no other, rich with over 300 years of history and tradition.
