Who are the favourites to finish in the top 4?

Five clubs are priced like they belong in four places, and that arithmetic is the whole tension of this market. Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United are the short ones at 1/8, 1/4, 2/5 and 8/13, prices that leave none of them room for an ordinary season.

Chelsea at 1/1 are the fifth, and they've got a lot of quality, arguably too much of it to fit into one team. How they manage that squad this summer is the big factor in whether they push on, and Levi Colwill coming back from a long injury will feel like a new signing.

Aston Villa at 7/2 are shorter than clubs who finished around them, and Unai Emery has them playing some lovely stuff. The question is what happens if the summer takes Morgan Rogers or Ollie Watkins out of that side, because how Villa replace either would decide how close they get.

Newcastle at 10/1 is a long shot and there's a fair bit going on at the club. The Isak saga clearly took its toll and they never really replaced those goals. Their season probably hinges on finding someone who can get them twenty-plus.

Tottenham at 10/3 complete the group with a case, and from there down you're into clubs who'd need one of the five above them to fall over.

How top 4 odds work

A top four price is the market telling you how likely it thinks a club is to finish in the Champions League places. What it isn't is a probability, and that difference is the part almost nobody bothers explaining.

Here's why it matters. Four places are available, so if those prices tracked pure likelihood and nothing else, between them they'd account for four clubs and stop. They never do. Not on this market, not on any market, not at any bookies including this one. There's always more in there than the four places can absorb, and the extra is the bookies' cut: the bit that pays for the whole operation, built into every price on the page rather than charged to you separately.

So a short price means the market rates a club highly. It doesn't tell you that club's actual chance, because the cut is baked in and there's no way to pick it back out from where you're standing. Anyone reading a price straight across as a percentage is quietly counting the bookies' margin as if it were the football.

None of which is a criticism of the price. It's how bookies have always worked, and knowing it just means using that table as a ranking of what the market thinks rather than a set of numbers to take at face value. Our odds explainer goes into more depth.

One last thing on settlement, because top four is unforgiving about it: fourth and first pay exactly the same, and fifth pays nothing at all no matter how the goal difference falls on the final afternoon.

Why a top 4 finish matters

Champions League qualification, and the money that comes with it, which for most of these clubs is worth considerably more than anything else on offer in a domestic season. The top four go into the Champions League league phase and that much has been stable for years. What's changed, and what almost nobody writing about this market mentions, is that four hasn't actually been England's cut-off for two seasons running.

UEFA hands out two European Performance Spots each season to the associations whose clubs did best in Europe the year before, and England has taken one of them twice in a row now. So the honest answer to whether the top four still means the Champions League is that the top four is guaranteed and fifth has been getting in lately without ever being promised anything. Whether fifth qualifies at the end of this season depends on how English clubs get on in Europe between now and May, which nobody can tell you in July.

Halve the number of places and every price stretches, which you can see most clearly in Arsenal going from 1/8 for the top four out to 4/7 for the top two. Same club, same season, same squad, and a very different bet.

Premier League top 10 odds

Go the other way and open it up to ten places and the prices at the top get short to the point of being barely worth looking at. This market is really about the clubs further down the table, where finishing in the top half is an actual question rather than a formality.
