Stats show Salah and Ronaldo's stars are fading fast
While Erling Haaland has taken the Premier League by storm, attacking stats underline the downturn in performances from Mo Salah and Cristiano Ronaldo
By James McMath
Erling Haaland has taken the Premier League by storm - and with the massive clash of Liverpool vs Manchester City this weekend, Midnite have compared the stats of all the forwards who play for the ‘big six’ teams.
The current campaign appears to be seeing the decline of the great six-time Ballon D’or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, and also a sharp downturn in the performances of Mo Salah.
With Arsenal thriving while Liverpool toil, and other teams struggling for consistency, the general perception is one of a changing of the guard of the big names in the English game.
But do the stats back up the perception?
Midnite crunched the numbers and found Haaland has been a class apart - so good that he outperforms even the entire Chelsea and Manchester United teams on his own.
But alarmingly, Ronaldo and Salah have suffered a severe drop-off in performance figures compared to last season when they were blazing a trail in the top flight.
And as if to confirm the impression given in the media, Gabriel Jesus and Arsenal are working together perfectly, the addition of the striker will give Gunners fans hope for some silverware delight by May.
Also in North London, it’s been a bittersweet season for England skipper Harry Kane as he continues performing at his goal-scoring best, but a certain Norwegian has taken the spotlight this season and it will have aggravated the Spurs striker for his lack of recognition in the media.
Here is the full breakdown of Midnite’s in-depth research into the current Premier League attackers:
Salah's struggles
Statistics show:
- Haaland has scored more goals than Chelsea and Man United
- Ronaldo is the worst Man United attacker whilst Martial is the best
- Salah is not even in the top three Liverpool forwards
Haaland is currently racing for the golden boot with football clubs rather than players, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo’s reasons for warming the bench have been justified with his current statistics.
Midnite has collected attacking data from the Premier League website for all of the forwards who regularly play for the ‘big six’ to compare and evaluate who has been the best attacker this season.
Haaland is currently on 15 goals in just nine games, whilst Chelsea and Manchester United have only been able to rack up 13 goals each this season.
CR7's Bench Press
Erik Ten Hag’s consistent decision of benching Cristiano Ronaldo has proven to be justified. The six-time Ballon D’or winner has only scored one goal this season which could be due to a lack of game time. But when he has played, the Portuguese star has only been able to achieve a shocking 26% of his shots on target, meaning he misses the target 74% of the time.
Limited game time should not justify poor statistics, especially when Ronaldo’s teammate, Anthony Martial, has been injured frequently but still has scored two goals, provided two assists and has 100% of his shots on target.
Salah has had a poor start to the season compared to his usual high standards, with two goals and three assists after eight games.
Compared to his teammates, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Roberto Firmino, he averages more matches per goal, a less percentage of shots on target and as many big chances created.
The Egyptian has not excelled in anything compared to his teammates, leaving him out of top three attackers for Liverpool this season.
This may come as a shock to most as the PFA Player of the Year last season had an outstanding campaign, winning the golden boot with 23 goals and the playmaker award with 13 assists.
Salah was averaging 1.5 games per goal and was hitting the target 13% more last season, now he’s averaging four games per goal and only a third of his shots have been on target, a serious decline in his attacking output.
Whereas his teammate, Firmino, has been Liverpool’s star man this season, scoring six goals and recording three assists. The Brazilian is close to averaging a goal per game, and is hitting the target 68.4% of the time with 19 shots so far.
North London's Hotshots
Gabriel Jesus has proven to be twice the goalscorer he is now than he was at Manchester City. His new role under Mikel Arteta has allowed him to average 1.8 games per goal, compared to 3.5 he averaged under Pep Guardiola.
Harry Kane is having a great season, averaging 0.9 goals per game, but is being overshadowed by Haaland’s alien-like scoring rate.
Overall, Manchester City are the best goal-scoring team by quite a distance, averaging 3.56 goals per game. While the Champions stay top, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are fighting for second, averaging 2.44, 2.25 and two goals per game respectively.
Chelsea and Manchester United have had disappointing goalscoring results so far, but the Red Devils claim the bottom spot out of the ‘big six’, averaging a dull 1.5 goals per game.
A Midnite spokesperson said: “Erling Haaland is performing to a never-seen-before level in the Premier League, even out-scoring some of the biggest clubs with his 15 goals.
“We need to give credit to Harry Kane too, who is almost scoring a goal per game for Tottenham, the England skipper looks hot on form in time for the World Cup.
“However, Mo Salah and Cristiano Ronaldo have been very disappointing this season, but that is mainly due to their goal-scoring standards they set last season, both were competing for the golden boot but now the award looks far out of reach.”
