If you’re eager to learn more about the FA Cup’s schedule, history, and overall facts, then here’s a rundown of everything you need to know, including when the FA Cup final is.

Teams from the National League have already been through their qualification rounds, and the 32 surviving teams will join the 48 from leagues One and Two.

The Second Round Proper will commence on 26 November 2022 and marks the last stage of the tournament without Premier League and Championship clubs.

Teams from the top-two tiers of English football join the FA Cup in January, shortly after the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup, during the Third Round Proper. After that, 2022/23 FA Cup dates are as follows:

The 2022-23 FA Cup schedule is a busy one. However, hopefully that’s cleared things up for you and made the competition easier to follow.

FA Cup History

The Football Association Cup is the oldest football competition in the world. It dates back to 1872, and was first won by the now-defunct Wanderers Football club. Since then, the competition has become iconic, and the FA Cup quickly became the most famous domestic football trophy in the world.

The competition was halted during the World Wars, meaning that Portsmouth are technically the longest-reigning champions, as they held the trophy between 1939 and 1946.

Remarkably, Harry Cursham (1859-1941) is still the FA Cup’s highest individual goal scorer. The late forward scored 49 goals in 44 games for Notts County, and his record has stood for almost 140 years.

Who Are The Most Successful Teams?

Arsenal are the most prolific winners of the FA Cup, having won it 14 times between 1930 and 2020. Long-serving Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is the most successful manager in the competition with seven victories from his 22 years in charge, whilst Ashley Cole is the most successful player.

Other serial FA Cup winners include:

  • Manchester United (12 victories)
  • Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur (8 victories)
  • Newcastle United (7 victories)
  • Manchester City (6 victories)

Who Have Lost The Most FA Cup Finals?

You can’t have serial winners without serial losers. The teams with the most defeats in FA Cup finals are Chelsea, Manchester United, and Everton with eight defeats each.

FA Cup Prize Money

Like all major sports competitions, the FA Cup offers prize money to its high-performers, meaning that there’s a major incentive to go far in the tournament.

The FA Cup prize pool is substantially lower than the UEFA Champions League’s, however, and it’s quite common for clubs fighting for a place in the EPL top-four to focus on the latter at the expense of the former. For sides in the lower leagues, though, the FA Cup prize money adds a much-needed boost to their revenues.

The FA Cup prize pool is as follows:

  • Outright winners - £2 million
  • Runners-up - £1 million
  • Semi-final winners - £1 million
  • Semi-final losers - £500,000

The smallest FA Cup payout is found in the preliminary round, and sees teams on the losing side receive £375.

The prize money received by the winners is a proverbial drop in the ocean for Premier League sides, but is considered big money for those in League One, Two, and below. Reward money, combined with the increased attendances for tournament games, makes the FA Cup essential for the English Football League system.

Do Premier League Sides Always Win?

Unfortunately, yes. The FA Cup odds are stacked against anyone outside the top flight. In the 20 years between 2001 and 2021, all of the FA Cup winners played Premier League football.

Wigan Athletic and Portsmouth achieved surprise victories, yet both of these sides were in the top-flight in 2013 and 2008 respectively. In fact, the only finalists from outside the Premier League during this time were Millwall (in 2004) and Cardiff City (in 2008).

The strength of Premier League sides, as well as their late entrance to the tournament, results in them having clear advantages over the lower-league counterparts.

Some speculate that the old-fashioned charm and mystique of the FA Cup has been lost due to the financial gulf between the top-flight sides and those in the Football League, but the FA Cup remains a sought-after prize nonetheless.

2023 FA Cup Dates Summary

The 2023 FA Cup final is booked for 3 June 2023 at Wembley Stadium, and it will kick off at 3pm.

Despite not being seen as the prestigious trophy it once was, the FA Cup is still an important competition, and its illustrious history can never be erased.
