FA Cup Extra Time And Penalties In the 5th Round

FA Cup 5th round extra-time and penalties and replays rule explained for 28 February and 1 March 2023

By James McMath

28 Feb 2023

We’re down to the last 16 in the FA Cup, as a place in the quarter-finals beckons.

Eight FA Cup 5th round matches will be held across tonight and tomorrow (28 February and 1 March) and there's an important rule update regarding replays, extra-time and penalties.

Will There Be Replays In The Fifth Round?

There will be no replays in the FA Cup 5th Round, meaning all of this week’s matches will be played to a finish.

Previous rounds of this season’s FA Cup did have replays. This is a change from the last two seasons - 2020-21 and 2021-22 - when third and fourth-round matches were also played to a finish.

So Extra Time And Penalties If It’s A Draw?

That’s right. If any of tonight’s or tomorrow’s FA Cup fifth-round matches are level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra-time will be played. If the ties are still level, penalties will be needed to separate the sides.

Prize Money

Winning teams in the FA Cup Fifth Round will each receive £225,000 in prize money, as well as a place in the quarter-final draw.

FA Cup Quarter-Final Draw

The details for the FA Cup quarter-final draw have not yet been confirmed but previous round draws have taken place on BBC’s The One Show.
