A Proving Ground For Generational Talent
The UEFA European Under-21 Championship has long been a breeding ground for future football stars. The tournament showcases young talents who have gone on to become globally recognised names in football. Below are some players who made a significant impression at the U21 Championships:
Andrea Pirlo (Italy)
Pirlo was named the best player of the tournament in 2000 when Italy won the championship. His incredible vision and passing ability were already evident at this young age.
Raheem Sterling (England)
Sterling, now one of the key players for Chelsea (cough) and the England national team, represented the England U21s and made a mark with his pace and skill.
Luís Figo (Portugal)
One of the greatest Portuguese players ever, Figo made a name for himself during the U21 Championship in the early 90s before moving on to stellar career at Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan.
Petr Čech (Czech Republic)
Named to the team of the tournament in 2002, Čech went on to have a highly successful career with Chelsea and Arsenal in the English Premier League, and is considered one of the best goalkeepers of his generation.
Rudi Völler (Germany)
The German forward was one of the stars of the 1982 tournament. He went on to have a successful career in both club football and with the senior Germany national team, with whom he won the World Cup in 1990.
Juan Mata (Spain)
Mata was one of the key figures in Spain's victory in the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He scored a goal in the final and was named to the Team of the Tournament. He's had a successful career at clubs including Valencia, Chelsea, and Manchester United.
Thiago Alcântara (Spain)
Thiago was also a part of that victorious 2011 Spain U21 side along with Mata. His performances led him to a successful career at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and now Liverpool.
