Midnite Rundown

The Final Third | 17th April 2026

The run-in has officially gone off the rails. Spurs are 18th and haven’t won a league game in 2026... yeah, really. Leicester are staring at League One. And Liverpool? A £450m rebuild now hanging by a thread after European heartbreak and a brutal injury blow.

Welcome to The Final Third. Midnite’s weekly briefing on the stories, shifts and fixtures that matter most.

It’s mid-April, and the 2025/26 run-in is getting real. The title race is tight, but let’s be honest, the real drama is at the bottom, where some of the biggest clubs in the country are staring down the barrel of relegation.

TL;DR

  • Spurs' historic collapse has them in 18th, and new boss Roberto De Zerbi has a massive rescue mission on his hands.
  • Leicester are 23rd in the Championship. League One football at the King Power is now a terrifyingly real prospect.
  • Liverpool's season is on the brink after a European exit and a nasty Achilles injury to Hugo Ekitike.
  • Chelsea vs Man United is a huge game that could seriously shake up the final Champions League places.

What Mattered This Week

The Unthinkable Collapse at Tottenham Hotspur

The stats at Spurs right now read like a glitch in the simulation. They’re 18th in the Premier League with just 30 points from 32 games. A squad with all the money and facilities in the world is in a relegation scrap. They haven't won a single league game in 2026, a 14-game winless streak that has completely shattered the team's confidence. Bringing in Roberto De Zerbi, their fourth manager in 12 months, feels less like a long-term plan and more like reaching for the emergency defibrillator. This is a club that lifted a European trophy just ten months ago. Now, they just need to survive.

Liverpool's Season on a Knife Edge

Arne Slot's second season at Liverpool is starting to unravel right when it matters most. After getting dumped out of the Champions League by PSG, the entire focus is on locking down a top-five finish. But after a £450m squad rebuild, sitting fifth on 52 points and miles off the title pace has brought serious heat to Anfield. To make things worse, they've just lost high-impact forward Hugo Ekitike for the season with an Achilles injury. That robs them of a key attacker just as a resurgent Chelsea starts breathing down their necks.

Leicester City's Championship Nightmare

While Coventry are cruising to the Championship title on 85 points, the real shock is happening down at the bottom. Leicester City are languishing in 23rd place with just 41 points from 42 games. The club that lifted the Premier League trophy not so long ago is now confronting the grim possibility of League One football. With only four games left to save themselves, the runway is getting very short. It's a brutal reminder of how nasty the Championship can be for relegated teams that can't stop the rot.

What To Watch This Weekend

Chelsea vs Manchester United

This Saturday evening clash at Stamford Bridge is massive for the Champions League race. Manchester United are currently third with 55 points and looking to cement their spot behind the top two. Chelsea, meanwhile, are down in sixth on 48 points. The Blues have to win this if they want to make a late push into the top five and put real pressure on Liverpool. With United being a tough nut to crack and Chelsea needing to go for it at home, the tactical battle should be fascinating.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Brighton & Hove Albion

You couldn't write this script. Roberto De Zerbi's first test in the Spurs dugout comes against his old club, Brighton. The Seagulls roll up to North London sitting pretty in ninth, completely free of the pressure that's suffocating the hosts. Spurs are two points adrift of West Ham in 17th, meaning every dropped point pushes them closer to the unthinkable. The big question is whether De Zerbi's famous tactics can instantly cut through the fear that's gripped this squad all year.

Leeds United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

While all eyes are on the top half, the stakes at Elland Road are just as high. Leeds are 15th on 36 points, and a win would give them some much-needed breathing space from the drop zone. Wolves, on the other hand, arrive rock bottom on 17 points. With 21 losses already, they’re playing for pride and a mathematical miracle at this point. Their last meeting was a five-goal thriller, but expect this one to be all about grit, scraps, and Leeds' desperation to finally pull clear.

Closing Thought

We're in the home stretch, and there's no more room for error. Whether it’s Spurs fighting for their Premier League lives or Chelsea trying to chase down the top five, this weekend is all about consequence. This is no longer about long-term projects. It’s about pure survival.
