Who are the favourites to win Serie A?

Serie A is still a tricky one to call, but the market has a much clearer shape now the season is under way. Inter Milan are the 4/5 favourites, with Roma at 9/2 the only other club shorter than 8/1.

Inter's price gives them daylight over the rest. At 4/5, the market sees them as more likely to win the title than any rival individually. That is not the same as saying the race is over, because football has a habit of making those claims look silly.

Roma are the nearest challengers at 9/2. That puts them well ahead of Juventus at 8/1, Como at 9/1 and AC Milan at 10/1, with those three forming the next group.

Como are the surprise in there. They are shorter than AC Milan and a long way ahead of Napoli, which is quite a shift for a club that climbed through the divisions on ambitious backing. They are no longer the curiosity at the edge of the market. The odds now treat them as a genuine part of the conversation.

Napoli have drifted to 25/1, so whatever case there was before the season, the market is no longer treating them as one of Inter's main challengers. Atalanta are next at 66/1, followed by Lazio at 100/1 and Bologna at 150/1.

That is where it drops off a cliff. Inter lead the way, Roma are the clearest alternative, and Juventus, Como and AC Milan make up the chasing group. Everyone else needs both a serious run of their own and the clubs above them to leave the door open.

How Serie A winner betting works

The outright market pays out on whoever finishes top, across twenty clubs and thirty-eight games between August and May, and that's the whole mechanic. Where each-way terms are offered your bet splits in two, half on the club winning outright and half on them placing, with the place half settling at a fraction of the odds across a set number of positions. Those terms vary between markets, so it's worth reading the ones attached rather than assuming they match something you've seen elsewhere.

One thing worth knowing if you go comparing Serie A odds around the internet, because you'll see plenty of pages turning them into percentages. Those percentages aren't quite what they look like. Every price has the bookies' cut built into it, ours as much as anybody's, so converting one straight into a percentage gives you the market's opinion with the margin still sitting inside it rather than a clean read on a club's actual chances. Do Serie A favourites usually win?

There's no published record of how often the pre-season favourite goes on to lift the Scudetto, in this league or most others, so anyone offering you a number has estimated it. What the league's own record does show is how the title has actually moved, which is the more useful thing anyway.

Juventus won nine in a row from 2011-12 to 2019-20, the longest run of consecutive titles in any of Europe's major leagues. Then it stopped, and the six seasons since have produced three different champions: Inter three times, Napoli twice and Milan once, with nobody managing to retain it. Worth being clear about what that does and doesn't tell you. It describes how the title has moved between clubs. It says nothing about whether the market picked any of those champions before the season started, which is a different question and one nobody has the data to answer properly.

What it does support is the sense that this is a league where the top can shift. A coach who clicks, or a couple of players having the season of their lives, has been enough more than once in the last six years.
