Inter Milan are 1/1 to win Serie A, which in a twenty-club league is about as emphatic as a pre-season favourite gets, with Napoli at 9/2 and Juventus and AC Milan both 5/1 behind them. The Italian top flight gets going on 22nd of August, and what they're all chasing is the Scudetto, named after the little shield the champions get to wear on their shirts for the following season.

Who are the favourites to win Serie A?

Serie A is a tricky one to call. Inter are always a dominant force, but there are enough big clubs here with the means to challenge that all it takes is a coach who clicks or a couple of players having a breakout season and the whole thing turns.

Inter at 1/1 come into it well rested, because a lot of their big names didn't feature at the World Cup after Italy failed to qualify. They've lost plenty of experienced players over the summer, though you could argue most were bit-part by the end, and they've gone for a more youth-focused recruitment strategy this year, which is always a risk.

Napoli at 9/2 will have been disappointed not to go back to back after the heroics of 24/25, but nobody was stopping Inter. Scott McTominay has a huge role to play, turning the loans of Højlund and Milinkovic-Savic permanent looks shrewd, and they haven't lost anyone major. A couple more quality additions and they're challenging again.

Juventus at 5/1 feel ready to take this league by storm. They've got all the right pieces and now just need to put them together, having freed up a substantial wage bill with Vlahovic and Kostic going and made Boga and Openda permanent. It feels more a mentality problem than a personnel one.

AC Milan are level with Juventus at 5/1 and Roma at 10/1 are the last side taken properly seriously, and then it drops off a cliff.

Atalanta at 33/1 is where that cliff lands, and their problem is the one it always is: hanging on to the players who do well for them. Marco Palestra has already gone to Chelsea this summer and Charles De Ketelaere may follow, which would leave holes in key positions.

Their recruitment has been savvy for years, but it relies on buying young, developing and selling, and with European football on top that's a strategy which can backfire quickly. Como at 40/1 are the curiosity, having climbed out of the lower divisions on unusual backing.

How Serie A winner betting works

The outright market pays out on whoever finishes top, across twenty clubs and thirty-eight games between August and May, and that's the whole mechanic. Where each-way terms are offered your bet splits in two, half on the club winning outright and half on them placing, with the place half settling at a fraction of the odds across a set number of positions. Those terms vary between markets, so it's worth reading the ones attached rather than assuming they match something you've seen elsewhere.

One thing worth knowing if you go comparing Serie A odds around the internet, because you'll see plenty of pages turning them into percentages. Those percentages aren't quite what they look like. Do Serie A favourites usually win?

There's no published record of how often the pre-season favourite goes on to lift the Scudetto, in this league or most others, so anyone offering you a number has estimated it. What the league's own record does show is how the title has actually moved, which is the more useful thing anyway.

Juventus won nine in a row from 2011-12 to 2019-20, the longest run of consecutive titles in any of Europe's major leagues. Then it stopped, and the six seasons since have produced three different champions: Inter three times, Napoli twice and Milan once, with nobody managing to retain it. Worth being clear about what that does and doesn't tell you. It describes how the title has moved between clubs. It says nothing about whether the market picked any of those champions before the season started, which is a different question and one nobody has the data to answer properly.

What it does support is the sense that this is a league where the top can shift. A coach who clicks, or a couple of players having the season of their lives, has been enough more than once in the last six years.
