LoL Esports Schedule: League Of Legends Events Calendar
An overview of the LoL esports schedule and League of Legends calendar including events such as Worlds, LEC, LCS and CBLoL
By James McMath
League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle area game published by Riot Games. Originally released in 2009, the game has gone on to become the world’s most popular esport.
There are several events of all sizes on the LoL esports schedule, from the huge scale of the World Championship and Mid-Season Invitational to smaller League of Legends events like league cups and country-specific divisions.
What is LoL, And Why Do People Bet On It?
League of Legends is considered the cream of the esports crop, with hundreds of millions of viewers watching the top-level tournaments.
Each continent has a continental league tournament, with the winners, runners-up, and third-place team from each league battling for a World title.
Let’s take a closer look at the World Championship as it’s the largest of all League of Legends events and the most famous of all LoL tournaments.

League of Legends World Championship
Undoubtedly the premier LoL event, the League of Legends World Championship (also called Worlds) sees teams battle for the Summoner’s Cup, along with a multi-million dollar cash prize. Check out the Worlds 2022 schedule.
The tournament attracts an enormous viewing (over 99 million people watched in 2018) and it has become the most-watched and followed esports event in the world.
Teams from all over the world play in the competition and its venue shifts across the world each year. The inaugural tournament was played at Dreamhack 2011, before the competition’s popularity forced it to become a standalone event.
The first standalone Worlds took place in Los Angeles, California, in 2012. Since then, it has been hosted all over the world.
Check out the schedule of LoL events for 2023.
LoL Worlds Format
The top-seeded LoL teams enter a group-stage format with 16 of the world’s best squads battling for a place in the finals. The previous year’s winners grant their regions an extra spot, with teams coming from North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, Korea, and China.
The outright winners of the Worlds aren’t only given a cash prize, but they also get to lift the 32-kilogram Summoner’s Cup and write their names into LoL folklore forever.
Iconic Worlds moments are memorialised by the game’s developers as they often add graffiti and other reminders at the in-game site where the moment took place.
Mid-Season Invitational
The Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) is another annual LoL tournament and is the second-most prestigious, behind the Worlds.
The Spring Split champions of LEC, LCS, LCK (Korea), and the LPL (China) join the MSI, along with a wildcard team from a league of lesser-quality.
The MSI is a popular tournament and attracts viewers from all over the world. Though not quite as prestigious as the Worlds, a victory in the MSI is still considered a huge achievement and it's considered one of the pinnacles of the entire esport.
Regional League of Legends Events
The global popularity of League of Legends translates to the number of continental leagues around the world.
From Europe, to Asia, to Brazil, there’s a series for every audience regardless of where you are on the globe.
Let’s take a look at the different continental leagues so you can find the one most relevant to you.
League Championship Series - North America (LCS)
A high-level LoL league exclusive to the United States and Canada, the League Championship Series features ten franchise teams playing several rounds.
Format
The LCS kicks off with a group-stage and an elimination bracket. Played across the spring and summer, the top 6 teams battle for a place in either the semi or quarter-finals, as the top two receive a bye into the semis as the remaining teams play in the quarters.
The overall winners, along with the 2nd and 3rd place teams, receive a place in the Worlds as representatives of their continent. They are also invited to the prestigious Mid-Season Invitational.
Campeonato Brasileiro de League of Legends (CBLOL)
As you probably would have guessed, the CBLOL tournament is played in Brazil, and it also features ten teams.
Since 2015, the CBLOL has taken place at Sao Paulo’s Riot studios, whilst the finals are held in the city’s Allianz Parque.
Much like its North American equivalent, the top three finishing teams qualify for the Worlds.
League of Legends European Championships (LEC)
The European equivalent of both the LCS and the CBLOL is the LEC, played at the Aldershof branch of Riot Studios.
The LEC was founded in 2013 and possesses a largely similar format to the other continental leagues - with its winner advancing to the Mid-Season Invitational and the World Championship.
Other LoL Tournaments
There are several second and third-tier League of Legends tournaments, such as the European Masters, the North America Proving Grounds Circuit, and the Northern League of Legends Championships (played in Northern Europe). Other notable leagues include France’s La Ligue Francaise, the Baltic Ultraliga, and Prime League Division One (played in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland).
These leagues are Tier 2 and 3 competitions, and therefore do not feature teams who are as skilled as the ones who play in the upper echelons. However, that isn’t to say that the quality of play is low, it just isn’t the best of the best.
There are also League of Legends league cups, such as:
League Cups:
- Demacia Cup - China
- KeSPA Cup - South Korea
- LCL Open Cup - Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)
These league cups are notable to fans in their respective countries, but are not as widely viewed or followed as the aforementioned global or continental competitions.
LoL Esports Schedule Summary
The sheer popularity of League of Legends esports mean that it’s easy to find a tournament to immerse yourself into. As always, bettors should familiarise themselves with the intricacies of the game as much as possible before they make bets.
The Worlds are by-far the most notable event on the LoL calendar, and it’s a tournament you shouldn’t miss if you wish to learn more about the game and its elite players. If you’re brand new to the world of esports, you’re unlikely to find an event with a larger viewership than this one.
