If you've never placed a football bet, the hard part isn't the football. You already know that bit.

At its simplest, you're picking something you think will happen in a match. Liverpool to win, both teams to score, a striker to have a shot on target, whatever it is you've got a feeling about. Then you decide how much you're comfortable putting on it.

Everything else is the machinery around that. What the odds actually mean, what half the markets are called, what happens after you tap confirm, and how long the money takes to come back if it goes your way.

This football betting guide covers all of it in order, from opening an account to getting paid. No assumed knowledge, and nothing here suggests betting is a way to make money, because it isn't.

How football betting works

Football betting means staking money on an outcome in a match, at odds set by a bookmaker. If the outcome happens, you're paid your stake back plus winnings based on those odds. If it doesn't, you lose your stake. Every bet can lose, and the odds reflect how likely each outcome is judged to be.

Understanding football betting odds

Odds do two jobs at once. They tell you what a winning bet pays, and they tell you roughly how likely the outcome is rated.

A team at 1/2 is expected to win comfortably and pays you very little for being right. A team at 10/1 probably isn't winning, and pays accordingly if they do.

UK bookmakers usually show fractional odds, which look like 5/1 or 4/5. The left number is what you win, the right number is what you stake.

Odds
What it means
Return on a £10 bet
1/2
Win £1 for every £2 staked
£15
4/5
Win £4 for every £5 staked
£18
Evens (1/1)
Win the same as you stake
£20
2/1
Win £2 for every £1 staked
£30
5/1
Win £5 for every £1 staked
£60
10/1
Win £10 for every £1 staked
£110

Those returns include your stake coming back.

You'll also see decimal odds at some bookmakers and in some apps, where 5/1 shows as 6.00 because decimal includes your stake in the number. Same prices, different convention, and how decimal odds work covers the swap between them. Betting odds explained is the fuller guide.

A price is not a promise. It reflects a judgement about how likely something is, and every price carries the bookmaker's margin inside it, which is how bookmaking works as a business. Short odds mean an outcome is considered likely. They have never meant it's safe, as anyone who has watched a 1/8 favourite draw at home will tell you.

What are the main football betting markets?

A market is a question about the match you can back an answer to. There are hundreds of them. These four cover most of what people start with.

Match Result (1X2) asks who wins: home, draw or away. The original question, and still the most backed one.

Over/Under Goals asks how many goals the match produces, above or below a line like 2.5. You don't care who scores them.

Both Teams to Score asks whether both sides find the net. A 1-1 draw and a 4-1 hiding settle it the same way.

Player markets ask about individuals: to score, to be booked, to have a certain number of shots.

That's enough to get started, and there's a lot more underneath it. Our full markets guide covers handicaps, corners, cards, correct score and the rest properly. [Pending publish: /blog/football-betting-markets-explained]

How to place a football bet, step by step

Opening and verifying your account

You'll need to register with your name, date of birth, address and contact details, and you'll be asked to verify your identity. Every operator licensed in Great Britain has to do this. It confirms you're over 18 and that you are who you say you are.

If you're asked for documents, Midnite accepts a passport, driving licence, national ID or residence permit as proof of identity, and a utility bill, council tax bill or bank statement dated within the last three months as proof of address. You upload them in the verification section of your account.

Send a full page with all four corners showing, unedited and in date. PDFs are preferred and screenshots aren't accepted, which is the single most common reason a document gets bounced back.

Documents can be requested at any stage of an account, not only at sign-up. What KYC means has the fuller version.

Adding funds

UK accounts can deposit by Visa or Mastercard debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Trustly or Pay by Bank. Credit cards aren't accepted, here or at any Great Britain licensed operator.

The minimum deposit is £5 on every method and deposits land instantly. You can have one active payment method on your account at a time, so switching means clearing your balance below £3 and having no open bets first. Our betting payment methods page has the detail.

Before you deposit, set a spending limit. It takes a minute and it's the most useful thing a new bettor can do. There's more on which limits are available below.

If there's a welcome offer running, its terms are on the welcome offers page. Read the terms before opting in, because every offer has qualifying conditions attached.

Choosing a market and building your betslip

To bet on football online, open Midnite's football, pick a match, and you'll see the markets for it. Tap a selection and it goes onto your betslip.

The betslip shows your selection, the odds, and a box for your stake. Type a stake and it works out what the bet returns if it wins, before you confirm anything. You can bet on football matches from any competition on the site the same way.

Placing your bet and tracking it

Confirm the bet and it's placed at the odds shown. From there you can follow it in your bet history, where it'll settle automatically once the match finishes and the result is confirmed.

The Midnite app does all of the above on your phone, so you can bet on football games wherever you're watching them.

Singles, accumulators and bet builders

A single is one selection, one bet. It wins or loses on its own.

An accumulator combines selections from different matches into one bet, with the odds multiplied. A treble is an accumulator with three legs. A bet builder combines selections from the same match.

Multiplying the odds multiplies what a winning bet returns, and it multiplies the ways the bet can lose, because every leg has to come in. A five-fold pays a lot more than a single because it is a lot less likely to land, not because it's a cleverer bet. Anyone who has had four legs up and watched the fifth concede in the 90th minute knows the feeling.

In-play betting and cash out

In-play betting means betting on a match while it's being played, with odds moving on every attack.

Cash out lets you settle an eligible bet early, before the outcome is decided, at whatever value is currently offered. Worth knowing the limitation: at Midnite, cash out is available before an event goes in-play, and once it's in-play it's no longer available on that bet.

In-play moves fast, and that speed is worth being careful with. Decisions made in the ten seconds after a goal are rarely your best ones.

Getting paid: withdrawals and timings

Winning bets settle automatically and the money goes to your account balance. Withdrawing moves it back to your payment method.

Timings depend on how you deposited. Apple Pay, Google Pay, Trustly and Pay by Bank withdrawals take up to 72 hours. Debit card withdrawals take up to five business days. The maximum withdrawal is £5,000 per transaction.

Money goes back to the method you deposited with, which is another reason verification is worth completing early rather than when you're waiting on a payout. Our withdrawal times page has the current detail.

Football betting rules worth knowing

Four rules cover most of the surprises a new bettor runs into.

Matches settle on 90 minutes plus injury time. Extra time and penalty shootouts don't count unless a market says otherwise. In a cup tie, your match result bet is settled when the 90 are up, whatever happens after.

Void bets get your stake back. If a selection can't be settled, it's voided and your stake is returned. Inside a multiple, a void leg drops out and the bet settles on the remaining legs.

Postponed and abandoned matches are usually voided if the game isn't completed within a set period. Terms vary by market.

Prices can change before kick-off. You're bet at the price you took when you confirmed, not the price at kick-off.

Betting responsibly

Betting is entertainment that costs money. It is not income, it is not a way to make back money you've lost, and no amount of football knowledge changes the fact that the great majority of people lose money over time.

Setting your limits before you start is the most useful thing a new bettor can do, and it matters more than anything else on this page.

Set a budget before you start. Decide what you can afford to lose, and treat it as a ceiling rather than a target. Money for rent, bills or food is never betting money.

Use the tools. They live under Responsible Gambling in your account, and they work far better set in advance, when you're calm, than reached for in the moment.

  • Net Spend Limit: A daily, weekly or monthly cap on what you actually spend, worked out as deposits minus withdrawals. Lowering it takes effect straight away. Raising it takes 24 hours, deliberately, so there's a pause between the impulse and the change.
  • Loss Limits: A cap on what you can lose over a set period, set by you.
  • Cool Off: Locks your account for anywhere from 1 to 30 days. Once it's on it can't be lifted early, which is the point of it. The account reopens on its own when the time is up.
  • Self-exclusion: For a longer break, and it can't be reversed on request either.
  • Reality Check: Reminders of how long you've been playing, at 10, 20 or 30 minute or hourly intervals. This one covers casino, live casino and virtuals rather than sports betting.

Midnite is also rolling out customer-set Deposit Limits, which cap deposits alone rather than net spend.

Know the warning signs. Betting more than you meant to, chasing losses, hiding it from people, or betting to escape stress rather than for enjoyment. Any of those is worth taking seriously.

GAMSTOP lets you self-exclude from every online operator licensed in Great Britain in one go, at gamstop.co.uk.

Free, confidential support is available from GambleAware and GamCare, whether or not you think the problem is serious. Talking to them commits you to nothing.

Midnite's tools live in the Responsible Play collection. Every operator offering betting in Great Britain must be licensed by the Gambling Commission, and you can check any operator's licence on their register.

FAQs

How do you bet on football as a beginner?

Open and verify an account, deposit an amount you've decided you can afford to lose, pick a match and a market, add it to your betslip, enter a stake and confirm. Start with simple markets like match result or over/under goals, and set a deposit limit before your first bet.

What is the best way to bet on football?

There isn't a best way, only the way that suits you. Some people bet small stakes on markets they follow closely, others prefer occasional accumulators for the entertainment. What matters more than the method is betting within a budget you set in advance and understanding what you've backed.

What is the safest bet on football?

No football bet is safe. Every bet can lose, including heavy favourites, and short odds mean an outcome is considered more likely rather than guaranteed. A shorter price also returns less, so "safer-looking" bets are not lower risk in any meaningful sense. The only way to control risk is to control your stake.

What should you know before placing your first bet?

That you can lose your stake, and that you should decide in advance what you're comfortable losing. Know what your bet needs to happen to win, check whether it settles over 90 minutes, and set a deposit limit before you start rather than after.

Your first bet, in order

Work out what the odds are telling you, pick a market you actually follow, and open and verify the account. Deposit only what you've already decided you can lose. Place the bet, and remember it settles on 90 minutes plus injury time, whatever happens after that.

Set your limits before you place anything rather than after.

Football betting should be a small extra layer on a game you were going to watch anyway. If it ever stops feeling like that, the Responsible Play tools and GambleAware are both there.
