If you're working out how to bet on basketball, it's four steps: pick a game, choose a market, set your stake and confirm the bet. For UK fans the tricky bit is the hours, since most NBA games tip off after midnight. Find them on Midnite's basketball page.
How to Bet on Basketball: The Basics
A basketball bet starts with a game or a competition, such as the NBA or the EuroLeague. The three markets most people use are the money line (who wins, overtime included), the point spread, also called the handicap, and total points. Quarter and half bets, outrights, in-play prices and accumulators sit around them.
If you've read our guides on how to bet on football or how to bet on rugby, the process is the same. What's different is the scoring, which arrives every few possessions and changes how every market behaves.
The Midnite Take: Basketball Betting: More Than Just Picking a Winner
By Dave Learmont, Creative Copy Lead at Midnite
Basketball is relentless. One minute your team's cruising with a double-digit lead, the next someone's landed three consecutive three-pointers and the game's flipped on its head.
When it comes to basketball betting, there's more to consider than who's winning. Moneyline bets are about picking the outright winner, point spreads account for the difference between teams, and totals focus on how many points both sides will score combined.
Whether you're following the NBA or European basketball, understanding the markets matters. Because knowing your point spread from your slam dunk is a decent place to start.
How Basketball Betting Works
NBA games are four 12-minute quarters, and a game level after the fourth goes to five-minute overtime periods until someone wins (NBA rules). FIBA competitions, the EuroLeague included, play four 10-minute quarters.
Basketball betting explained in one idea? Almost every game ends with a winner, and the scores are big.
Because overtime keeps going until the tie is broken, the money line on an NBA game has two selections, not three. There's no draw to back.
The scores shape everything else. NBA teams averaged 115.6 points a game in the 2025-26 season (Basketball Reference), so total points lines sit well above 200.
High scoring also explains why the spread is so popular. When one team is clearly better, its money line price is short. The spread evens that out by asking how much a team wins by.
And a lead in basketball is never quite as safe as it looks. Anyone who's watched a comfortable fourth-quarter cushion vanish in a few possessions knows the feeling.
Popular Basketball Bets Explained
Midnite's NBA pages label the main markets Money Line, Spread and Total Points, with money lines for the first half and first quarter alongside them.
Money Line
The money line is a bet on who wins the game, overtime included. Pick a team at its price, and if it wins, by one point or thirty, your bet wins.
Say the Celtics are 1/3 and the Lakers are 5/2. Both prices are invented for the example.
£10 on the Lakers at 5/2 Lakers win in regular time? Your bet wins. Lakers win in overtime? Your bet still wins. Celtics win? Your £10 is lost. Return if it wins: £35
The shorter price on the Celtics reflects that they're more likely to win. It doesn't make them the better bet.
Point Spread (Handicap)
Basketball spread betting is what the UK has always called handicap betting, so if you know handicap betting from football, you already know the idea. The favourite gets points taken off, the underdog gets points added, and the bet settles on the adjusted score. Midnite labels it Spread.
Take the Lakers at +5.5 against the Celtics at -5.5, both at 10/11 (invented for the example).
£10 on the Lakers +5.5 at 10/11 Lakers win the game? Your bet wins. Lakers lose by 4? Your bet wins, because 4 is less than 5.5. Lakers lose by 6? Your bet loses. Return if it wins: £19.09

The half point means a game can never finish exactly on the line, so the bet either wins or loses. Spreads include overtime on Midnite.
The spread is also where garbage time bites. A favourite can cruise for three quarters, empty the bench and watch the margin slip under the line.
Total Points (Over/Under)
Total points is a bet on the combined score of both teams, over or under a line. Say the line is 224.5. A 115-112 game makes 227 points, so Over 224.5 wins. A 110-108 game makes 218, so Under 224.5 wins.
Overtime points count towards the total. A game level after the fourth gets at least five more minutes of scoring, which can carry a total over the line late on. Our guide to over/under betting covers totals across sports.
Quarter and Half Bets
Midnite prices a 1st Half Money Line and a 1st Quarter Money Line on NBA games, settled on the score at the end of that period. Quarters and halves can finish level, and if the first half or first quarter is drawn, Midnite voids the bet and returns your stake.
Second-half and fourth-quarter markets include any overtime, which catches people out.
Outrights
Outrights are season-long bets. In the NBA, the main one is the outright winner: which team takes the title. The 2026-27 regular season ends on 11 April 2027, with the play-in from 13 to 16 April and the playoffs from 17 April (NBA key dates). An outright placed in October stays open for months, and the price you took is the price you get.
In-Play Betting
Live basketball betting means betting while the game is on, with prices moving as the score changes. Midnite's basketball in-play page lists the games running now. On NBA games, in-play markets include money lines, points lines, quarter lines and race to a set number of points. Cash out is available on NBA singles and accumulators, but not on bet builders.
Prices move with almost every possession, so check the price on your bet slip before you confirm it.
Basketball Accumulators
An accumulator puts several selections into one bet, such as three NBA money lines on the same night. Every leg has to win for the acca to pay out, and one losing leg loses the whole bet.
More legs mean a longer price because the bet is less likely to land, not because it's a cleverer bet. Our guide to what an accumulator is shows how the returns multiply.
How to Read Basketball Odds
Midnite shows odds in fractional or decimal format, and you can switch between them in your settings (understanding odds formats). This guide uses fractional. American odds, such as +200 or -150, don't appear on Midnite. You'll still see them all over NBA coverage, so they're worth being able to read.
Fractional odds show profit against stake. 5/2 means £5 profit for every £2 staked. Decimal odds show the total return, with your stake included.
American odds work from 100. A plus number is the profit on a stake of 100, so +200 means 200 profit. A minus number is what you'd stake to make 100 profit, so -150 means staking 150 to win 100.
These rows are the same price written two ways, not Midnite prices.
Don't mix up the two plus signs. In a bet on the Lakers +5.5 at 10/11, the +5.5 is the handicap and 10/11 is the price.
Our betting odds explained guide goes further, and there's more on how decimal odds work and how to convert decimal odds to fractions.
How Overtime Affects Your Bet
Overtime counts on most basketball markets at Midnite, but not all of them. From Midnite's basketball betting rules:
- Money Line, Spread, Total Points and Odd or Even include overtime.
- Second-half and fourth-quarter markets include any overtime.
- A drawn 1st Half or 1st Quarter Money Line is void, and your stake is returned.
- An abandoned game voids money line, spread and total points bets.
How to Place a Basketball Bet on Midnite

- Open Basketball from the sports menu and choose a competition, such as the NBA.
- Pick a game, or the outrights for a season-long bet.
- Tap a price to add it to your bet slip.
- Enter your stake, check the To Return figure and place the bet.
Your bet sits in your open bets until it settles. Online basketball betting on Midnite works the same way on the app and the website. [OPTIONAL: annotated bet slip screenshot from Product]
Which Basketball Leagues Can You Bet On?
The NBA is the main event, priced on Midnite's NBA competition page. Midnite's competition list also includes the EuroLeague, Australia's NBL, the FIBA Europe Cup, Japan's B.League and women's competitions such as EuroLeague Women and Australia's WNBL.
The 2026-27 NBA regular season tipped off on 20 October 2026, and the NBA Cup final is on 11 December in Indianapolis. On Sunday 17 January 2027 the Pelicans and Spurs play a regular-season game at Co-op Live in Manchester (NBA).
Most NBA games tip off between midnight and about 3am UK time, because an evening game on the US east coast is already the early hours here. Prime Video, which shows NBA games in the UK, also has Saturday games in the European evening (Advanced Television).
The EuroLeague regular season runs from 24 September 2026 to 16 April 2027, with 20 teams playing 38 rounds (Eurohoops). Its games are played in Europe, so they land at a far friendlier hour for UK viewers.
Basketball Betting Strategies: What Helps and What Doesn't
No basketball betting system beats the bookies' cut over time. Every price carries a margin, so the prices across a market add up to more than the outcomes available, and that difference is the bookies' cut. A system can change how you stake. It can't remove the margin.
What helps is understanding why a price is what it is. That's the honest version of basketball betting strategies, and most of it comes down to who's actually playing:
- Injuries and rest. NBA teams rest players through a long season, and a star sitting out moves the spread more than almost anything else.
- Back-to-backs. A team playing on consecutive nights, especially after travel, is a different proposition on the second night.
- Pace. Teams that play fast create more possessions, and more possessions mean more points, which is why totals lines differ from game to game.
- Home court. Travel, altitude and crowds all feed into a line before a ball is thrown up.
None of this is an edge. The bookies read the same injury report you do, and by the time you've seen it, the price usually reflects it. What it gives you is a clearer idea of what you're backing and why the number sits where it does.
Any NBA betting guide that promises a winning system is selling something. Doubling your stake after a loss to win it back is chasing losses, whatever name it comes under.
Bet Responsibly
Decide your budget before the first game tips off, and keep it to money you can afford to lose. NBA games run into the early hours, and late nights are when it's easiest to add one more bet than you planned.
Midnite's tools sit under Safer Gambling in your account, where you can also set a deposit limit. A Net Spend Limit caps deposits minus withdrawals over a day, a week or a month. Loss Limits cap what you can lose over a set period, and Cool Off gives you a break of 1 to 30 days that can't be lifted early. The Responsible Play hub has the full set, and GamCare and BeGambleAware offer free, confidential support.

FAQs
What Is the Best Way to Bet on Basketball?
There isn't one best way to bet on basketball, and no method guarantees a win. Start by understanding the main markets, the money line, the spread and total points, and set your budget before you place anything.
What Does +5.5 Mean in Basketball?
+5.5 is a point spread, or handicap. The team gets 5.5 points added to its final score, so a bet on it wins if the team wins or loses by 5 or fewer. It loses if the team loses by 6 or more.
What Does +200 Mean in Odds?
+200 is an American odds price. It means a stake of 100 makes 200 profit if it wins, the same as 2/1 in fractional odds. Midnite shows fractional or decimal odds, not American.
How Should a Beginner Bet?
Keep it simple: a single on the money line or total points in a game you're watching, with a stake you're comfortable losing. Set a Net Spend Limit or Loss Limit first, and check how overtime affects the market you've picked.
Before Tip-Off
Pick the game, pick the market, check whether overtime counts, then set your stake. Midnite's basketball odds cover the NBA, the EuroLeague and more, and if American football is next on your list, see how to bet on NFL games. Keep every stake to an amount you'd be fine losing. 18+. Please gamble responsibly.
Alongside basketball, Midnite is the NFL's official sports betting partner in the UK and Ireland and principal partner of Wolves, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United for the 2026/27 season.
