Who has scored the most penalties in the Premier League?

A look at who has scored the most penalties in Premier League history and which current stars are the best bet to break records

Spot-kicks are an important part of football matches and they can make or break a club’s entire season if the stakes are high enough.

Of the current generation of Premier League stars, only Harry Kane is seriously on-course to claim the record for most penalties scored. The England captain still has a way to go, but should he play in the division for the remainder of his career, he could walk away with not just the record for most spot-kicks, but could be a good bet to be the top scorer in Premier League history.

Let’s take a detailed look at the players with the most penalty goals in the English top flight and examine the methods behind their genius.

Who Has Scored The Most Penalties In Premier League History?

Unsurprisingly, the player with the most penalty goals in Premier League history is Alan Shearer. The former Blackburn and Newcastle striker scored 56 penalties across his 14 years playing in the division and took a total of 67 spot-kicks.

Shearer is followed in the rankings by:

  1. Frank Lampard (43 penalty goals)
  2. Steven Gerrard (32 penalty goals)

As you can see, Shearer scored considerably more penalties than anyone else in this list, but the Englishman had the luxury of being the main penalty-taker for two clubs unlike the others, who spent most, or all, of their careers at a single team and weren’t always on duty to handle matters from 12 yards.

Let’s take a look at the profile of each of these players and see how they fared in front of goal.

1 - Alan Shearer

With 260 Premier League goals to his name, Alan Shearer knew how to handle matters in the penalty box.

The number of penalties the former Newcastle striker took means that he holds the record for the most penalties scored and missed in Premier League history. Though Shearer was known for being superb from 12 yards, he did have the occasional blunder.

  • Total penalties taken - 67
  • Total penalties scored - 56
  • Total missed - 11

Shearer was known to not mess around when he took a penalty, often rifling the ball in with considerable force using the laces.

2 - Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard was always handy from the penalty spot, however he wasn’t always Chelsea’s main man from 12 yards. Sometimes responsibility fell to Didier Drogba, Diego Costa, Fernando Torres, or another striker.

Nevertheless, Lampard buried plenty of penalties during his long Premier League career.

  • Total penalties taken - 50
  • Total penalties scored - 43
  • Total missed - 7

Lampard sometimes went for placement over power. Whilst he could certainly smash the ball in, he occasionally side-footed the ball into the corner if he was feeling confident enough. He even took a few chipped, Panenka-style penalties if he was really in the mood.

3 - Steven Gerrard

A one-club man in the Premier League, all of Gerrard’s penalties came for Liverpool and the midfielder frequently took penalties. However, Gerrard did fall down the penalty pecking order once world-class strikers Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez arrived at Anfield.

  • Total penalties taken - 39
  • Total penalties scored - 32
  • Total missed - 7

Much like Alan Shearer, Steven Gerrard often rifled the ball home taking advantage of his trademark shooting ability. Gerrard did miss occasionally, but overall the former England midfielder was a safe bet in front of goal.

Who Has Missed Most Premier League Penalties?

No player wants to be high in the rankings for all-time penalty misses in the Premier League, but someone has to be.

In fact, Wayne Rooney is the player with the most failed spot-kicks in Premier League history with 11. Rooney is tied with Alan Shearer, also with 11, to make the Premier League’s two top goalscorers the players with most missed or saved penalties.

However, this isn’t to say that Rooney or Shearer were bad penalty takers at all. When you consider how many they took, the amount they ended up missing is actually a rather small percentage. Rooney was also behind Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Dimitar Berbatov, and Robin Van Persie when it came to Manchester United’s penalties, meaning that he was often not the first-choice taker.

Middlesbrough’s Juninho, a renowned free-kick taker, was unable to transfer his talents to the penalty spot as the Brazilian failed to score a single spot-kick from four attempts - the most of any player. Considered the worst penalty-taker in Premier League history, Juninho is followed by Paul Merson and Mike Newell, who both missed 3 out of 3 total penalties they took.

Best Bet To Break Shearer’s Record

Of the four players below Alan Shearer, only Harry Kane is still playing Premier League football. The Tottenham striker still has some way to go to break the record having converted from the spot 28 times by the beginning of September 2022, but his potency in front of goal makes him the most likely player to do so.

Of course, the amount of goals Kane scores from the penalty spot could radically increase at any time, so he could break the record very soon or not break it at all.

Seeing as Kane is the main penalty taker for his club, it’s likely that he will break Shearer’s record at some point and he may also break Shearer’s all-time Premier League goalscoring record by the time he hangs up his boots.

Sergio Aguero should have been much higher up the list, however the Argentine was often absent from City games during his last few years at the club. Augero scored 26 goals from the spot during his 10-year tenure at Man City, missing 6 of them including his last attempt - an infamously bad effort against Chelsea.

Matt Le Tissier was a famously solid penalty taker, but the Southampton legend didn’t quite take enough penalties to be up there in the scoring charts even though he scored 25 of 26 attempts. The only player with a 100% record from 12-yards, having taken a minimum of 10 penalties, is former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, who scored 11 from 11.

Shearer The Premier League Penalty King

Alan Shearer sits at the summit for most penalty goals in Premier League history, but how long his record lasts is anyone’s guess.

The Newcastle legend could see his record broken soon, or never broken at all. Shearer would prefer the latter, but, as we all know, anything can happen in the Premier League.
