Emmanuel Frimpong on Arsenal, Arteta and Declan Rice
Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong discusses the Gunners' all-time greats, Mikel Arteta and a potential move for Declan Rice
By James McMath
Midnite spoke to Arsenal and Premier League cult hero Emmanuel Frimpong, with the Gunners entrenched firmly in a Premier League title race.
The north London outfit can briefly move eight points clear of Manchester City, with Mikel Arteta continuing to torment his former mentor, Pep Guardiola. A victory would put the Premier League betting odds firmly in the favour of the Gunners.
The Spaniard may never have competed in a Premier League title race while with the Gunners, but he did have the pleasure of sharing the pitch with Frimpong.
The 31-year-old, who represented Ghana internationally, gave his insight into Arsenal’s transfer business, how his former teammate gets his hair so immaculate and the Invincibles squad of 2004.
Here's the interview in full.
Which members of the current squad would get into the Invincibles team of 2004?
“I think Zinchenko definitely, for me, Ashley Cole was very good but Zinchenko makes left back look like he is playing in central midfield. I think Zinchenko is an incredible player.
“I don’t think Thomas Partey is a better player than Patrick Vieira, but I think Partey would have a shout.
“He is also playing well and is high on confidence, which is very good. Apart from that, I don’t think so.
“That team was crazy man, they were just on another level. So those two players have definitely got a shout.”
How does Arteta manage to keep his incredible hairstyle so well groomed and maintained?
“Everyone in the changing room would have their own locker and Mikel Arteta would have his own blowdryer and this special gel.
“So after training, before he goes out to have his lunch, his hair would have to be straight and perfect and his eyebrows would have to be in order.
“I remember we used to have a laugh at him, and we always used to notice how he wanted everything to be perfect - he’s a very good looking man!
“He puts a lot of effort into his looks and I hope he puts the same effort into his coaching.”
Should Arsenal make Declan Rice their No.1 transfer target for the summer?
“I think Rice is a top, top-class player and he proved that in the World cup.
“He impressed me more than I thought in the World Cup and he showed me that he had very good technical abilities, good awareness and has good pace to recover when needed.
“I feel that, in an Arsenal shirt and with better players around him, he will be able to flourish. So we need to get into the Champions League to be able to attract players like Rice. Who wouldn’t want to play in the Champions League in London, for Arsenal?”
