From Manchester City's off-pitch drama to Brighton's flying start, The Final Third breaks down the week's biggest football stories and the fixtures worth watching this weekend.

Welcome to The Final Third. Midnite's weekly briefing on the stories, shifts and fixtures that actually matter.
TL;DR
- Manchester City's off-pitch turbulence is dominating the headlines, but Enzo Maresca's side are completely ignoring it with a 100% start to the Premier League season.
- Brighton continue to dismantle defences as the division's top scorers, casually shrugging off a massive summer exodus.
- Southampton boss Tonda Eckert escapes a touchline ban over last season's Spygate scandal, leaving his fourth-placed Saints free to focus on a flying Championship start.
- Winless Tottenham travel to Manchester United with two managers already feeling the early-season heat.
What Mattered This Week
The Verdict Looms Over Manchester City
Manchester City’s off-field practices have finally caught up with them, having been found guilty of the majority of their 115 Premier League charges. Manager Enzo Maresca came out fighting, insisting the club’s past titles are "absolutely not" tainted, but the fallout is going to dominate the conversation for the rest of the campaign.
On the pitch, City look entirely unbothered by the noise. They sit top of the Premier League with a perfect 15 points from their opening five fixtures. With 13 goals scored and just five conceded, the on-field machine is as relentless as ever. The question now is whether the boardroom chaos eventually fractures their domestic dominance, or if Maresca just channels it into the ultimate siege mentality.
Brighton's Remarkable Rebuild
If this was supposed to be a transitional season for Brighton, nobody told their frontline. After finishing eighth last season and booking Conference League football, the club oversaw a massive squad overhaul. They shipped out top scorer Danny Welbeck to Chelsea, defender Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham, and midfielder Carlos Baleba to Manchester United for an initial £65m.
Despite the exodus, Brighton sit third in the Premier League table with 10 points. They are the division's most lethal attacking force, topping the charts with 16 goals in just five matches, averaging a ridiculous 3.2 goals a game. They have turned 80% of their fixtures into Over 2.5 goal encounters, proving their recruitment model works regardless of who is actually wearing the shirt.
Southampton's Spygate Reprieve
Down in the Championship, Southampton have had a massive let-off after manager Tonda Eckert was handed a six-week suspended ban by the FA. The punishment stems from the Spygate scandal that saw Saints thrown out of last season's playoffs for spying on semi-final opponents Middlesbrough. With Eckert free to stay in the dugout, Southampton can finally just focus on the football.
They have channelled that off-field drama into a highly entertaining start to the new campaign. Sitting fourth in the table with 14 points from eight matches, they are firmly in the playoff mix. Entertainment is basically guaranteed; they have scored 19 times already, and both teams have found the net in 100% of their league fixtures so far.
What To Watch This Weekend
Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur
Talk about two managers in desperate need of a result. Roberto De Zerbi takes his Tottenham side to Old Trafford sitting rock bottom of the Premier League. Spurs are winless after five matches, managing just two draws and scoring a miserable two goals. The only silver lining for the travelling supporters is the impending return of Dejan Kulusevski following a 513-day injury nightmare.
Michael Carrick is facing just as much heat in the opposite dugout. Manchester United sit 12th with five points, scraping together just one victory so far. The £65m arrival of Carlos Baleba is yet to fix their midfield problems, and they have conceded exactly as many goals (8) as they have scored. With both clubs massively underperforming, this Saturday evening fixture feels huge for the mood at both clubs.
Crystal Palace vs Nottingham Forest
Oliver Glasner returns to Selhurst Park on Sunday for a fixture with serious off-field edge. Just months after leading Crystal Palace to the Conference League, the Austrian is now in the Nottingham Forest dugout, stepping right into the middle of an ugly legal dispute between the two ownerships. Glasner has already acknowledged the divided loyalties and the likelihood of a hostile reception.
On the pitch, both sides are desperate for a result to get their campaigns going. Palace are 16th with four points and are winless at home, averaging a grim 0 points per game at Selhurst Park so far. Forest sit slightly higher in 13th with five points, but they have been excellent on the road, taking two points per game away from the City Ground. Palace’s defence will have to hold firm against their former manager’s tactical blueprint.
Swansea City vs Norwich City
At the top of the Championship, early pacesetters Swansea City will look to consolidate their lead against a struggling Norwich side. The Swans sit top with 17 points from eight matches and have built their success on a rock-solid foundation, conceding a league-low six goals and keeping clean sheets in 50% of their fixtures.
Norwich, by contrast, arrive in Wales sitting 17th after losing five of their opening eight games. They have been dangerously porous at the back, shipping 17 goals already and failing to register a single clean sheet this season. Swansea’s home form has been strong, and they will see this as the perfect chance to punish a fragile Norwich defence and protect their spot at the summit.
Closing Thought
The opening weeks of the season have already drawn stark lines between what happens on the pitch and the noise off it. While Manchester City and Southampton are successfully ignoring their legal and disciplinary dramas to get results, clubs like Tottenham and Manchester United are finding that a lack of early-season rhythm quickly mutates into pressure from the stands.
