Learning how to play bingo takes about a minute, because the rules fit on the back of the ticket. The details are where people get stuck.

How to Play Bingo: The Basics

To play bingo, you buy one or more tickets printed with numbers. Numbers are then drawn at random and called out, you mark off any that appear on your ticket, and the first player to complete the winning pattern, such as a line or a full house, wins the prize. In Britain, the standard game is 90-ball bingo.

You play bingo with numbers this way in every format. What changes from game to game is how many numbers are in the draw, what the ticket looks like, and which patterns win.

At a club or online, you play bingo the same way. Online, the computer draws the numbers and marks your ticket for you.

How Do You Play 90-Ball Bingo?

British bingo is 90-ball: numbers from 1 to 90 are drawn one at a time, and every ticket has 15 of them.

Under standard bingo rules in the UK, each game of 90-ball has three prizes, played in order:

  • One line: the first player to mark off every number on any one row of a ticket.
  • Two lines: the first to complete any two rows on the same ticket.
  • Full house: the first to mark off all 15 numbers on a ticket.

The game carries on after each prize until someone calls the full house.

Tickets often come in strips of six. Across a strip, every number from 1 to 90 appears exactly once, so each number called is guaranteed to be on one of your six tickets.

How Many Numbers Are on a Bingo Card?

A 90-ball bingo ticket has 15 numbers, set out in three rows of nine columns. Each row has five numbers and four blank squares.

The columns follow the numbers in order: the first column holds 1 to 9, the second 10 to 19, and so on up to 80 to 90 in the last. A 75-ball card is different, with 24 numbers and a free space in the middle.

The game decides how many numbers are in bingo's draw. In British bingo the numbers go up to 90, with 90 the highest number called. The American version goes up to 75.

What Is a Full House in Bingo?

A full house in bingo is every number on one ticket marked off: all 15 in 90-ball. It's the last prize of the game and usually the biggest.

One line and two lines come first, so a ticket that completes the full house will already have passed through both. Those earlier prizes go to whoever got there first, which might not be you.

Bingo Calls

At a club, the caller reads each number out, often with a traditional rhyme. A few you'll hear in any hall:

  • Kelly's eye: number 1
  • Legs eleven: 11
  • Two little ducks: 22
  • Two fat ladies: 88
  • Top of the shop: 90

Online games call the number on screen, and some read it out too. Nobody minds if you never learn the rhymes.

How Do You Play 75-Ball Bingo?

75-ball bingo uses a five by five card with the letters B, I, N, G and O across the top. Each column draws from its own range: B is 1 to 15, I is 16 to 30, N is 31 to 45, G is 46 to 60 and O is 61 to 75. The centre square is a free space.

Instead of lines and a full house, 75-ball games are played for patterns. The game announces the pattern before the draw starts: a straight line, four corners, a shape such as a letter, or the whole card (a blackout).

A straight line in 75-ball is five in a row, across, down or diagonally. Lines through the centre use the free space, so they need only four called numbers.

Other Bingo Games: 80-Ball, 30-Ball and 52-Ball

Beyond 90-ball and 75-ball, online sites run several shorter formats.

80-ball sits between the two main formats, on a four by four grid with patterns similar to 75-ball.

30-ball, sometimes called speed bingo, uses a nine-number ticket and is usually played for a full house only, so games are over in a couple of minutes.

52-ball swaps numbered balls for a standard deck of playing cards, which are drawn and matched instead of numbers.

Bingo Rules in the UK: Who Can Play and How Claims Work

You have to be 18 years old or over to play bingo for money in Great Britain, whether in a bingo club or online. The Gambling Commission lists both bingo halls and online gambling under its 18+ rule.

The Gambling Commission also sets out what makes a game bingo in the first place. Every ticket in a game has to have the same chance of winning, players have to take part to win, and the game has to have a defined end point. Its fundamental principles of bingo page has the detail.

In a club, you claim a prize by calling out (usually "House!" or "Bingo!") as soon as the last number you need is called. The caller then checks your ticket against the numbers drawn. Miss your moment and the game moves on, which is the one bingo rule regulars take seriously.

Online, claims are checked automatically. If two players complete the same prize on the same number, the prize is usually split between them. The game's rules say how.

How Do You Play Bingo Online?

To play online bingo, you buy tickets before the draw starts, and the game draws the numbers at random and marks your tickets automatically. This is called auto-daub, and it means you don't miss a number while you're reading the chat or making a cup of tea.

A few things are different from a club:

  • Games are faster. The next draw can start seconds after the last one ends.
  • Tickets are bought in advance for each game, often with a choice of how many.
  • Wins are checked for you, so there's no need to call out.
  • Formats vary more, from 90-ball to 30-ball and video bingo games that mix bingo with slot-style features.

Some online bingo games are played in a room with other players, while others are single-player games against the draw. The game's info screen says which, along with the ticket prices and prizes, and it's worth a look before you play any new bingo game for the first time.

Playing Bingo on Midnite

Midnite's bingo games are casino games, and they sit in the casino lobby rather than in a bingo room. Bingo 90, Bingo 75 and Rush Bingo follow the idea of live bingo, but they're single-player, with no shared draw, caller or chat. There are no other players to beat to a line, a random number generator draws the numbers for your tickets, and prizes are set by the game's own paytable.

The bingo lobby includes Bingo 90 and Bingo 75 from G Games, Rush Bingo from Inspired Gaming, and video bingo titles such as Immortal Romance Video Bingo, which mix a bingo card with slot-style features. Open any game's info screen to see how tickets, prizes and the RTP work for that game.

Online games can run one after another with barely a pause, so far more games fit into an hour than at a club. Decide what you're spending before the first draw and keep an eye on how many games you've played. A Reality Check reminder tells you how long you've been playing, and a Net Spend Limit caps your deposits minus withdrawals over a day, week or month. You'll find both in the Responsible Play hub.

If you like the bingo grid but want something quicker, Slingo mixes bingo with slot reels. For other quick-play games, there's the instant win section and scratchcards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bingo 4 or 5 in a Row?

Bingo is five in a row in the 75-ball game, though a line through the centre uses the free space, so it needs only four called numbers. In 90-ball bingo, a line is all five numbers on one row of your ticket.

How Do You Explain Bingo to a Beginner?

Tell them it's a numbers game. Everyone gets a ticket of numbers, numbers are called at random, and you mark off any you have. The first person to complete the pattern being played for, usually a line or a full house, wins.

What Are the Rules for Playing Bingo in Pubs?

Pub bingo usually follows 90-ball rules, with the caller setting the house rules on prizes and how to claim. Where money is involved, pubs have to stay within legal limits on stakes and prizes, and players must be 18 or over.

What's the Best Way to Play Bingo?

Every ticket in a game has the same chance of winning. More tickets cover more numbers, but each one costs the same, so you're paying for every extra chance. Pick a format you enjoy, play a number of tickets you can keep track of, and set your budget before the first game.

Eyes Down: The Rules in Brief

90-ball is played for a line, two lines and a full house. 75-ball is played for patterns, five in a row. Both are in the Midnite bingo lobby.
