Cluster pays slots ditch the paylines, so there's no tracing zigzags across the reels. You win by landing a group of matching symbols that touch horizontally or vertically on a grid, and on most of them the winning cluster then vanishes so new symbols can drop in.

What Are Cluster Pays Slots?

Cluster pays slots swap the reels-and-lines layout for a grid, and a win is a connected group of identical symbols rather than a line from left to right. Each game sets its own minimum cluster size, from five symbols on some titles to nine on others, and bigger clusters pay more.

You'll also see them called cluster slots, or just cluster pays. The real change is where your eyes go after a spin: across the grid for groups, not along lines. There are several in the Midnite slots lobby.

The Midnite Take: Cluster Pays: When Winning Lines Go Out the Window

By Dave Learmont, Creative Copy Lead at Midnite

Most traditional slots are about matching symbols along paylines. Cluster Pays slots take one look at that system and decide to do things differently.

Instead of lining up matching symbols across specific lines, you're looking for groups of matching symbols touching each other, usually horizontally or vertically. Get a big enough cluster and it can trigger a payout, depending on the game's rules.

Some games even remove winning symbols and drop new ones into their place, creating the possibility of consecutive wins from a single spin.

Different formation. Same important rule: check the paytable before kick-off.

How Do Cluster Pays Slots Work?

A cluster pays slot checks the whole grid after each spin for groups of matching symbols that touch side to side or top to bottom. Diagonals don't count, however neat they look. A symbol sitting corner to corner with its match is a neighbour, not part of the cluster.

Minimum cluster size changes from game to game, so check the paytable or the game's info section first. On Midnite's game pages, Reactoonz and Sugar Rush both need five or more connected symbols, while Aloha! Cluster Pays needs nine or more.

Payouts scale with cluster size. The same symbol pays more in a bigger group, and the paytable sets out each step.

Aloha! Cluster Pays swaps the usual wild for a crate symbol that turns into whichever neighbouring symbol makes the best cluster.

Cascades, Tumbles and Avalanches

Cascades, tumbles and avalanches are three names for one feature. When a cluster wins, its symbols are removed, the symbols above fall into the gaps, and new ones drop in from the top. If that forms another cluster, it pays too, and the sequence carries on until nothing new connects.

All of that happens inside one paid spin, which is why some spins seem to go on forever. Reactoonz says cascades and Sugar Rush says tumbling reels, but it's the same mechanic. Sugar Rush adds multiplier spots, marking each grid position that's part of a win with a multiplier that builds if that spot wins again.

Aloha! Cluster Pays uses Sticky Win Respins instead, which can hold a winning cluster in place while the rest of the grid respins, and the sequence continues while new matching symbols join.

Cascades don't change a game's RTP. A long chain looks dramatic, but it doesn't make the game more generous over time.

What Types of Cluster Pays Slots Are There?

Cluster pays slots come in three broad types: classic fixed grids, grids with charge meters and transforming features, and Big Time Gaming's Megaclusters.

Classic cluster grids. A fixed grid, a fixed minimum cluster and either cascades or respins. Aloha! Cluster Pays, on a 6x5 grid, is the model.

Charge meters and growing features. Reactoonz is the busy one: on its 7x7 grid, every winning symbol charges its Quantum Leap meter. Collecting 25 symbols triggers a Quantum feature that can transform symbols, add wilds or clear low-value symbols from the grid.

Megaclusters. Big Time Gaming's variant, launched in 2020 with Star Clusters. Each symbol in a winning cluster splits into four smaller symbols, so the starting 4x4 grid can grow to as many as 64 positions, as CasinoBeats reported at launch.

Cluster Pays vs Scatter Pays vs Megaways

Cluster pays, scatter pays and Megaways all drop the classic payline, but each decides a win its own way.

Mechanic

Examples at Midnite
Paylines
Matching symbols along a set line
On adjacent reels along that line
Big Bass Bonanza (10 paylines)
Megaways
Matching symbols on adjacent reels, with the number of ways changing every spin
On adjacent reels, starting from the left
Bonanza Megaways
Cluster pays
A group of matching symbols touching each other
Touching horizontally or vertically, anywhere on the grid
Aloha! Cluster Pays, Reactoonz, Sugar Rush
Scatter pays
A set number of matching symbols
Anywhere on the grid, touching or not
Sweet Bonanza, Gates of Olympus (8 or more)

Scatter pays is the one people mix up with cluster pays. Sweet Bonanza and Gates of Olympus both have a grid and tumbling symbols, so they look the part, but Midnite's game pages list both as scatter pays, paying for 8 or more matching symbols anywhere on the grid.

Megaways is closer to an old-fashioned slot, because symbols still have to land on adjacent reels from the left. Our guide to Megaways slots covers the maths, and the Megaways lobby shows the range.

Where Did Cluster Pays Come From?

NetEnt launched Aloha! Cluster Pays in March 2016, one of the first slots built around the mechanic, as iGaming Business reported at the time. It put the mechanic in the title, which is why the name still comes up first.

Others followed. Play'n GO released Reactoonz in 2017 and Pragmatic Play released Sugar Rush in 2022, according to their Midnite game pages, while Big Time Gaming took the idea somewhere new with Megaclusters in 2020.

Cluster Pays Slots to Try at Midnite

Aloha! Cluster Pays, Reactoonz and Sugar Rush show the range of cluster pays slots online at Midnite, from low to high volatility. There's no single list of the best cluster pays slots, because the right one depends on how you like a game to play.

  • Aloha! Cluster Pays from NetEnt: 94.04% RTP, low volatility, a 6x5 grid and clusters of nine or more, with Sticky Win Respins.
  • Reactoonz from Play'n GO: 94.51% RTP, high volatility, a 7x7 grid and clusters of five or more, with cascades and the Quantum Leap meter.
  • Sugar Rush from Pragmatic Play: 94.50% RTP, high volatility, a 7x7 grid and clusters of five or more, with tumbling reels and multiplier spots.

These are the figures on each Midnite game page on 22 October 2026, so check there before you play. RTP is a long-run average rather than a forecast for one session, and every value is independently tested, as our help centre explains. For more on both numbers, see what RTP means in slots and what volatility means in slots.

A run of cascades can make one spin last a while, and a session can run longer than you planned. Reality Check reminders cover casino games at Midnite, and they sit alongside Net Spend Limits in the Responsible Play hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Symbols Do You Need for a Cluster?

It depends on the game. Many cluster pays slots need five or more matching symbols touching horizontally or vertically, but some set the bar higher: Aloha! Cluster Pays needs nine. The paytable shows the exact number.

Do Cluster Pays Slots Have Paylines?

No. Cluster pays slots replace paylines with clusters, so a win can form anywhere on the grid as long as the matching symbols touch side to side or top to bottom.

What Is the Difference Between Cluster Pays and Scatter Pays?

In cluster pays, matching symbols have to touch to form a win. In scatter pays, they only need to land in a set number anywhere on the grid, as on Sweet Bonanza and Gates of Olympus.

Are Cluster Pays Slots Better Than Payline Slots?

No, they're different rather than better. The mechanic changes how wins form and how a game feels to play, not its RTP. Every slot's long-run return is set by its own maths, whatever the grid looks like.

Before You Load a Grid

Touching symbols make a cluster, the paytable tells you how many, and cascades change how a spin plays out, not what the game returns over time. The slots lobby has the grids side by side.
