Who are the favourites for Championship promotion?

You’ll see this shape most years now. The parachute money that follows a club down, combined with a wage bill the rest of the division simply can’t match for a season or two, means the sides arriving from the Premier League usually turn up as the best-funded teams in the league. The market prices them that way long before anyone has kicked a ball.

West Ham at 4/6 are the clearest example of it this summer, with Wolves and Burnley close enough behind that the top of this market is effectively those three and then everyone else.

What makes the next group interesting is that it’s built on last season rather than on money. Middlesbrough at 7/2 and Southampton at 5/1 were both in and around the play-off places when the season finished. Millwall, a bit further out at 7/1, were in that same conversation, so all three arrive with a reason to think they’re close rather than just hopeful. Birmingham City are the other 7/2 shot.

Then there’s Wrexham at 4/1, who everyone has an opinion about. Some of that price is based on what they’ve actually done, climbing through the divisions at a rate that would look far-fetched in a script. Some of it comes from the attention and financial backing that arrived with the ownership.

Either way, they’re priced as a genuine promotion contender in the second tier, which is a sentence nobody was writing five years ago.

Automatic promotion versus the play-offs

Two clubs go up automatically, and that part is refreshingly free of complication: finish first or second and you’re a Premier League side, with goal difference sorting out anything that finishes level.

The third promotion place is where it gets interesting. The clubs that finish third through sixth enter the play-offs, which consist of two-legged semi-finals followed by a one-off final at Wembley. It’s a match that gets described as the richest game in world football roughly once a minute during the build-up.

Finishing third sounds like it ought to count for something, but all it really buys you is the home leg second. That’s why a club sitting third in April can often look considerably more nervous than one sitting fifth with nothing to lose.

For betting purposes, none of that matters. A promotion bet covers every route up, so a club that scrapes sixth and then wins at Wembley pays out exactly the same as one that wins the league by fifteen points.

How Championship promotion betting works

The thing that trips people up is that promotion and winner are two different bets on the same clubs.

Look up West Ham and you’ll find 4/6 in one place and 9/4 in another, and both are right. A promotion bet pays out if they go up by any route, which three clubs manage every season. A winner bet pays out only if they finish top, which one club manages. More ways for the promotion bet to come in means a shorter price.

Each-way betting is also worth mentioning on the winner market, where the terms sometimes allow the place part of your bet to settle even if the club doesn’t finish top.
